It seems like a good time to look at some nice pieces of antique jewellery, just for the pleasure of admiring them. The first piece is the oldest, a gold seed pearl piece from the late 18th century. Made in Southern Italy, it is probably a component from a larger necklace or earrings which has been converted into a brooch/pendant.

Next is an unusual piece from the early to mid 19th century. It is an 18ct gold watch key, modelled as a pistol with lion head grip. It’s a good length at 4.9cms. A watch key is a key which has been created to wind a pocket watch and while many were simple metal keys, others were very ornate, meant to be displayed publicly and admired.

The ornate watch keys were made of gold or silver, with most being gold cased. Some were very striking, made in the shape of animals or pistols (like this one), while others were set with gemstones, cameos or micro mosaics.

The next piece is an unusual Victorian gold necklace which has been set with thin round disks, each engraved with a flower. A lovely piece to wear in Spring.

Finally, there is the turquoise and seed pearl collar in the photo at the top of the post. This is late Victorian and is a charming piece. It has four strands of seed pearls, with linked with pearls in two places, leading to five natural oval cabochon turquoise matrix bezel set in gold. Between the turquoise ovals, the seed pearl strands have been joined by pearls forming a simple pattern.  There is a gold box clasp with engraving. Like so many Victorian pieces, the necklace is quite short, measuring 37cms.

Enjoy!
