Those born in February are very lucky to have the amethyst as their birthstone. This lovely purple gemstone is a member of the quartz family and comes in all shades of purple, from a soft lilac to a deep, intense purple. The stones can be quite large, though the larger stones often lack an intensity of colour. Amethysts have been used in jewellery for a very long time and continue to be a popular gemstone today.

Antique amethyst and diamond ring

The pendant/brooch at the top of the post is Georgian and is fully enclosed at the back. Its colour is a little bit darker than in the photo. The amethyst in the large Victorian ring above is quite a pale colour and has a couple of noticeable inclusions. It has a striking border or rose cut diamonds.

This 15ct gold ring also has a large amethyst. It is quite a strong colour and has a split pearl border. It may have been converted from a brooch.

The gold earrings below are vintage and each comprises two oval amethysts with good colour.

All the pieces are beautiful and it is not hard to see why the amethyst has been and continues to be such a popular gemstone.
