Although my main interest is antique jewellery, as a gemologist I also love to see jewellery with colourful gems. Recently, I have noticed an increase in striking modern gem-set pieces being produced, mainly from India. The gems being used are lovely quality and often quite large. I thought I would show you some.

Let’s start with the very large pendant in the photo at the top of the post. It is 90mm long and ends with a large baroque pearl. There is a central amethyst of approx.10 carats, then rose-cut diamonds weighing about 2.4 carats, with other gemstones, mainly topaz. Like most of these gem-set pieces, it is set in silver gilt.

Necklace set with amethyst drops

The necklace above has a fringe of amethyst cabochons, graduated in size, with the largest being approx. 17 carats. Each cabochon drop is decorated with three rose cuts and there is a small ruby set between each cabochon.

Modern ruby and jade pendant

The brooch/pendant above is also another large piece, with a drop of 70mm. It is set with jade and rubies and makes a real statement.

Green sapphire and diamond frog pendant

And, finally, a bit of fun. The pendant above is shaped as a frog and is set with light green sapphires and rose cuts, with ruby eyes.
